4 days of beautiful Hill Country miles and views. This camp is for anyone looking for that comeback, type 2 “fun”. Get as much as you want out of this training. Winter 2013 Leakey was the first place John and our friend Alan took me when I had only been riding two weeks. John plainly said, “There’s not a hospital for miles so descend at your own caution.” Enough said. I had my first parking lot tip over in clipless pedals, but more importantly one of the first places I learned how to truly suffer and dig deep. Since then we’ve aimed to come back every winter with friends and teammates for some solid base miles and camaraderie. 13 years later, it’s still one of our favorite places to train.
What to Expect
We’ve got 2 BIG back-to-back days in the saddle book-ended with the classic shakeout/recovery rides. The first big day with 2 options of distances, but make sure to leave gas in the tank for the BIG Loop the next day. Leakey delivers on HARD climbs, longer and steeper than your average Texas climb. Combined with FAST descending (40+mph) on mountainous, hill country terrain this is not for the light-hearted, you will need to have confidence in your skills. Volume and climbing training all-in-one. Roads are Texas chip ‘n seal, we recommend 28C-30C or higher tire width. Whether you bring a road bike or gravel bike, have your climbing gears ready (at least a 1:1 ratio)! Be prepared with good proper gear and layers even for the chilliest temps.
